Elderly woman whose purse was stolen receives check from Pope Francis


Pope Francis sent money to a woman’s parish after she told him she had her purse stolen on a bus as she traveled to see her sick husband.

The pontiff mailed a check to the woman's parish, in the amount of about $270, after hearing of how her purse had been stolen while she rode a bus to see her sick husband.

Pope Francis is not only offering words of wisdom and support — he's handing out cash, too!

The pontiff, famous for randomly phoning up followers to give spiritual guidance, sent $270 to an elderly woman who'd written to him saying she'd been mugged.

In her late 80s, the Venetian told the leader of the Roman Catholic Church her purse was stolen as she traveled on a bus to see her sick husband in hospital.

To the shock of her local priest, an envelope sealed by the Vatican secretary of state and addressed to the lady arrived at his parish last week.

Clergyman Don Gianni Antoniazzi opened the letter to find a check and a note signed by Francis' new alms master Archbishop Konrad Krajewski.

"Please deliver in the manner it deems appropriate, the relevant amount to the lady in question, that it is a gift of His Holiness, who offers her his apostolic blessing accompanied by desired aid and divine comfort for her and for her husband," it read.
