Obituary for parishioner, Dr. John B. Southard

John B. Southard, M.D., 89, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Baptist Health Louisville.

He was born December 12, 1925 at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. John's younger years were spent in Panama and San Francisco. He moved to Louisville in 1943 and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon discharge, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, for two years and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1954. He was commissioned first lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served his internship at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio from 1954-1955.

John was a family physician in Highland Park for 37 years until he retired in 1993. He was well respected by his colleagues and loved by his patients. He was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, JCMS, KMS, AMA and former member of Big Spring Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. William White Southard, M.D. and Mary Pauline Dumler Southard; and brother, Col. William W. Southard, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Breeden Southard; son, Mark Southard; daughters, Leigh Brown and Kim Plock (Bill); six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a special friend, Monica Crume.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Mt. Washington, KY.
